The Effectiveness of Different Bracket Slot Dimensions in Orthodontic Treatment

Today’s orthodontists have a choice between two nominal slot sizes, which are 0.018 and 0.022-inch. 0.018-inch slot can be filled more efficiently and certainly in the early stages of treatment. In this way, the advantage of early anterior torque control could be provided. The smaller and more flexible finishing archwires used with 0.018-inch slot can be more easily manipulated by the orthodontist. However, there may be fewer choices for arch size selection with 0.018-inch slot. Especially at the beginning of the treatments, the free sliding of the archwire through the bracket slot and thereby lighter forces can be obtained with the use of undersized wires in 0.022-inch slot. In the later stages of treatment, larger dimension archwires in 0.022-inch slot increase the stiffness of the archwire and help keeping the teeth in an upright position during retraction and space closure mechanics. 0.022-inch slot offers more options in archwire size selection. However filling the slot with full-sized stainless steel rectangular archwires reduces the range of the archwire, therefore can limit the ability of the clinician to bend the wire and give torque effectively. Choosing a specific bracket slot size for better orthodontic treatment efficiency requires sufficient knowledge about the advantages of one system over another. The aim of this review is to evaluate the effects of bracket slot dimension on the effectiveness of the orthodontic treatment.
