INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to comprehensively evaluate the effects of three different orthodontic treatment methods applied to individuals with skeletal Class II anomaly on facial profile esthetics.
METHODS: Thirty-six patients with skeletal Class II anomaly selected from the archives of the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, Ege University were divided into three treatment groups (extraction, Class II elastic and distalization). Pre- and post-treatment profile photographs were standardized parallel to the Frankfurt horizontal plane using WebCeph v2.0.0 software. The images were edited using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom programs. The photographs were evaluated using a 5-point Likert scale by a total of 60 evaluators, including 20 orthodontists, 20 dentists, and 20 laypeople. The data were analyzed using One- Way ANOVA, Friedman Two-Way Analysis of Variance and Tukey HSD test to determine significant differences.
RESULTS: When the data were examined, significant differences were observed among the treatment methods in terms of esthetic outcomes (p<0.05). In all groups, Class II elastic treatment received the highest esthetic improvement scores, while extraction treatment was evaluated with the lowest scores. In the distalization group, the statement “no change” was used more frequently. Orthodontists demonstrated a more critical perception of esthetics compared to dentists and laypeople.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: This study evaluated the effect of three different orthodontic treatment methods on profile esthetic perception. The most positive perception was observed in the Class II elastic treatment group, while extraction treatment received the lowest scores. Orthodontists made more critical evaluations compared to the other groups.
Keywords: Class II elastic treatment, distalization treatment, extraction treatment, profile esthetics, skeletal Class II anomaly.
