INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the effects of buccal tube length (l), slot-to-base distance (d), and applied orthodontic force (F) on adhesive stress distribution, tooth displacement, and periodontal ligament (PDL) deformation in the mandibular first molar using three-dimensional finite element analysis.
METHODS: Nine configurations with varying tube lengths, slot distances, and force magnitudes were modeled in a mandibular molar finite element setup. Directional tooth movement and stress levels within the adhesive and PDL were analyzed. A statistical comparison was performed to assess the individual and interactive effects of each analyzed parameter.
RESULTS: An increase in buccal tube length resulted in approximately 62% reduction in adhesive stress, suggesting enhanced bond reliability. Increasing slot-to-base distance led to a 29% increase in adhesive stress, 5.5% increase in tooth displacement, and 2.5% increase in PDL deformation. The findings revealed that the applied force accounted for 99.59% of the variation in tooth and PDL displacement, while buccal tube length (0.01%) and slot distance (0.4%) showed negligible effects.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The applied orthodontic force is the dominant factor influencing both adhesive stress and biological tissue response. While modifications in buccal tube geometry effectively reduce adhesive stress, their role in altering tooth movement is limited. Optimal tube design may offer supplementary benefits, but precise control of force magnitude remains the key to biomechanical safety and clinical success.
